South Dakota has very high gross weights off of the interstate system. Gross weights are limited only by the federal bridge formula, with no maximum weights specified. In this agricultural state, this has led to some of the biggest and heaviest trucks in America. Unlike Michigan, which limits the number of axles to 11 for one combination, South Dakota has no limit on the number of axles. Additionally, combinations with up to 81’6” of cargo carrying capacity are allowed on all highways. The interstate system is limited to 80,000 lbs, unless you buy a permit for an LCV, with which you can pull turnpike doubles up to 48’ long, and 129,000 lbs on the interstate and selected routes.
